Flight with DA - the Dallas Aerospace by Av3r Flight with DA - the Dallas Aerospace by Av3r
The Future was not the Future, back in the 50s and 60s: it was called TOMORROW.

With that in mind I designed this t-shirt reminding of old flight companies' posters (mainly PanAm) mixed with the classic and fascinating look of the "Past Future" or "The Future that Never Was".

This is an iconografic project, a really enjoying one for me!

Three colors, with also a funny reinterpretation of DA's Fella on the back in the style and tone of Hanna & Barbera's Studios!
NOTE: I did NOT use any autotracing tool or any similar aid. What you see was completely hand drawn starting from a marker sketch on a towel and then has been worked on digitally with only Photoshop (pen instrument and halftone filters). So, yes, it's all, in its entirely, a product of my imagination and design :)

And if you have problem reading what's written on the shirt, here's the transcription of the text I included on the image! I hope you'll enjoy it too, because I sure had a lot of fun writing it!

FRONT
"Right on time!

Business meeting on Jupiter and then dinner at home with the family?
With us you can!

Dallas Aerospace
The fastest, safest and most advanced space fleet in the whole Galaxy!
Business men, families and space tourists from all over Earth have chosen us as their preferred travel companion, and more are joining!

Book a flight with DA today from your local Space Travel Agency, and you can win a sub-oceanic cruise under the North Pole and around the glorious ruins of Atlantis for all the family!

Dallas Aerospace has reduced catastrophic accidents trough the Van Allen Belt to a remarkable 29%. Also Deep Space Pneumonia, Black Hole Schizofrenia and Temporal Sub-Lobotomy have only occured in 21% of cases on randomly chosen passengers. Feel free to ask your local Doctor about the safety of Space Flight with DA: he knows, he's already a DA Client!"

BACK, under Fella
"Wherever Future's pointing, we're flying!"
:)

Thank you!

Almost 80% of non-finalist designs should have won instead of those ignominous choices. But thank you very much :-)

Forgot to how much I like the fact that you kept it to three colors and used smaller dots of color for gradations. nicely done!

Thank you very much for your vote and your comments!
Yes, I used the Halftone pattern technique, because it reminded me of the old Comic Books graphic and newspaper style, so I definitely needed that.
And, yes, it can all be painted with only those three colors :)

Thank you very much, but I've seen some great designs out there, judges are gonna have one hell of a time choosing the favourite two... Especially swimming in tons and tons of pure design crap :D

Your design is good, simple, well executed and funny, so keep it up! :)

Grazie grazie grazie!
Disillusione vs Illusione

Thank you very much indeed, I was looking for a good color scheme that would work perfectly with navy blue and black / dark gray t-shirts.
I'd have to design a reddish one for yellow or white backgrounds, though :)

The photocomposition one is good, the other one is nice but I think it needs to be refined, especially the space station on the background, but I like the fact that the overall look and feel (especially the cars) is more 70s than 60s ^^

Love it! I wish I could make something look like it was actually drawn in the 50's-60's. Great work. What do you think about what I did come up with? [link]

I studied a lot, went trough Youtube for sci-fi movies of those years, Google and quite some books of Design to define what elements were recurrent... Plus, think of it in these terms: your image has to talk, it must tell a story. My design is telling this story:
"Whoa, how great is progress! Can you believe I'm actually having a businness meeting on Ganymedes, on the outskirts of Jupiter, and I can still be home in Burbank on time for dinner? Gosh, how I love my sweet Sue's roastbeef! Ah I just can't wait to tell my neighbours about this trip, this sure beats Muldoon's new Anti-G Chevrolet!"

He's a satisfied businessman, he's into the values of those times: good job, good family, American values and please the Boss... Before you think at the solely looks of an era, you might want to dig deep in the reasons that brought designers to think that way. It's fun, amazing and if you are a curious person you can really discover great things and stories.
For example I abandoned the idea of having DA Fella as the main character: he would never have been, back in the 60s, he was too cartoony and would barely fit a toys' commercial. So I used him as a mascotte, an in-joke, and let that obnoxious businessman as the center "of the story" :-)

Sorry if I went too long. If I can give an advice keep the yellow on black design, but try to clean and define more your lines: also avoid straight lines and flat perspectives... Future, back then, was all about huge spaces, enormous heights, daring perspectives... So exagerate them, make Fella pop out of the picture, 'cause he's diving into the Future! :-)

Plus: I'm not a big fan of "all-out" designs: go smaller on you t-shirt, don't use all the area, on the front and especially on the back.
That's one of the reasons why hipsters' t-shirts are designed better than heavy metal bands': the first ones have small designs on the front, the other ones use all the possible space available and fill it with heavy designs in pictorial style... UGH! :)

(still: I love heavy metal and hard rock :-) )

Wow! No this wasn't too long at all! I really appreciate the time you took to explain everything so clearly! Is there any way for me to alter my current image without losing whatever votes it may already have? I thought about cleaning up the lines a little bit and still have my original source image available. But after pasting it on the shirt there it looked to small to easily see imperfections. I imagine that whoever the winner is would be given a chance to clean it up for large size printing? At any rate I appreciate the thoughtful critique. The only actual criticism I could offer you would be the fact that the small print within your design is hard to read. Even blown up on a full size shirt think of how annoying it would be to have some random schmoe try to read it while you are out and about. Great design! Best of luck, hopefully see you in the semi-finals.

I think that if you edit your file before the contest closing date of submission you can correct any imperfections... But ask DA staff for this :)

Yeah, the text is kinda small, especially the fun one on the bottom regarding health problems related to flights in open space :)
Maybe I'll expand it, but that's a minor problem: it was more like a cadeau, a trivia, than an actual piece of the design. And I think that if you are with a nice girl that you like and she asks you "hey, what's written there, under 'With us you can?'" then you'll have a perfect excuse to stay closer to her :)
Design can improve conversations and create mating opportunities! hehehe!

Just joking around... :)

Votes for this! I had the same idea ->flying to the moon , flying to the moon2 (posters of early "Lufthansa" in my mind), but i made a more modern design. Long story short: I like your design more than mine :D :(

Well, thank you I guess :-)
Our designs are very different, Yours is more focused on a cartoonish look, mine goes on the replica of the graphic style of those years (vector-like graphics in this case as opposed to the finely painted ones of the 50s and 60s) but you can never know what the general public will like, don't you think? :)
DeviantArt has a large young base of users, so you can never be too sure that a more "professional" touch means more chances of success... So don't despair, the battle's still open!
Cheers!
